Seminars by Professor Zbigniew Michalewicz
Professor Zbigniew Michalewicz from The University of Adelaide will be visiting Cercia on 18th-19th June. He will be giving two seminars (details below). You are welcome to attend - both seminars are free. Refreshments will be available. Professor Michalewicz has over 30 years of academic and industry experience. Currently he serves as Chairman of the Board for SolveIT Software Pty Ltd, a company specialising in custom software solutions for demand forecasting and scheduling and supply chain optimisation.
CERCIA Workshop on New Applications of Computing in the Creative Industries
CERCIA, on behalf of the ICT Innovation Club at the University of Birmingham, is hosting a workshop on 'New Applications of Computing in the Creative Industries' on Friday March 14 2008. The 'Intelligent ICT Solutions' innovation club at the University of Birmingham has been established in association with the Advantage West Midlands (AWM) ICT Cluster to provide a forum for end users, businesses and academic experts to discuss challenges and exchange ideas with a view to developing innovative solutions enabling economic gain. This event is free to all.
New Forensic Applications

Cercia awarded Honda Research Contracts
02-10-2008 – CERCIA has been awarded two Honda research contracts to extend the current work on "The co-evolution of functional information and information control on the DNA" and on "An artificial environment with human interaction for the evolution of brain-like processing patterns".
Cercia welcomes Mr Weishan Dong and Mr Yang Yu
22-09-2008 – Cercia welcomes two new visitors this month, Mr Weishan Dong and Mr Yang Yu. Weishan Dong is coming to us from The Institute of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and will be with us until April 2009. Yang Yu is from the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Nanjing University (P.R.China) and will be with us until March 2009.

10-09-2008 – CERCIA Director, Prof. Xin Yao, delivered an invited keynote talk at the 2008 UK Workshop on Computational Intelligence (UKCI'08), at De Montfort University, Leicester, on 10 Sept 2008, on "Cooperative Coevolution for Large Scale Evolutionary Optimisation".

15-08-2008 – Cercia welcomes a new visitor, Dr. Tapabrata Ray from School of Aerospace, Civil and Mechanical Engineering, University of New South Wales, Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra, ACT 2600, Australia, who will be with us for six month, working on multi-objective dynamic optimisation using evolutionary algorithms
Bridging The Gap Travel Awards
31-07-2008 – The Bridging the Gap program is inviting applications to its Travel Awards. These awards, for up to £1500, are designed to enable staff to visit and establish links with other academic or industrial parties both within the UK and overseas. Applications can come from any member of academic staff (including Research Fellows), we particularly invite applications from early career researchers. The deadline for the application is 15 August 2008
Cercia PhD student, Mr. Peter Oliveto, wins Best Paper Award
16-07-2008 – Cercia PhD student, Mr. Peter Oliveto, won the Best Paper Award of the "Genetic Algorithms" track at the 2008 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'08), Atlanta, Georgia, USA, 12-16 July 2008, for his co-authored paper.
